One of the things I remember doing a lot of as a child was making friendship bracelets. My friends and I would get together with our boxes of embroidery thread, beads and safety pins and choose colors from each others boxes to make bracelets symbolizing our friendship. Once you tied those suckers on, you did NOT take them off until they were falling off. (Or until you had a family wedding to attend, or some function where you had to dress up and Mom told you to ditch the ratty looking bracelet. Ha!)

The thing was, it was kind of a pain to always be pinning the bracelet to your pants or the bedspread while you were working on it. And keeping those strings sorted if you had to stop for a bathroom break could get tricky too - it was easy to tangle them up by accident. HEXBUG Nano: Product Review

I was given the opportunity to do a review on some HEXBUG Nano toy sets. When I first saw them I didn't know what to think! My daughter is a total girlie girl and I took one look at these toys and was confused about how they work, and not sure how much fun they would be for her. On the other hand, my husband took one look at the boxes and started ripping right into them! It was like watching a kid on Christmas morning, ha! I had to laugh at that - clearly he knew they would be fun to play with. As it turns out, he was right! These toys are really, really cool.

HEXBUG Nanos are little robotic bugs that use the physics of vibration to move. They come with tracks to run along and to battle in. The bugs race each other, flip over and back onto their feet, bump into one another, etc. They look incredibly lifelike once they get going! You can arrange the tracks to be multi-level, and in a variety of different patterns making for hours of creative play. There are numerous ways to watch the bugs go - from racing them, to setting them up for "battle" to just letting them do their own thing around the track and watching where they'll go next. The Glow in the Dark set is particularly cool as the bugs and the track take one minute to "charge" before shining brightly in the dark - adding another level of excitement for the kids. D is only 3 years old. Although the packages say 3+ and she got a total kick out of the toys, when it comes to solo play I do think they are better suited for slightly older children. Having said that, with the help of an older friend or an adult they are certainly appropriate for 3 year olds as well. She just had some trouble getting the tracks together and setting everything up by herself. I do think that in a group setting these toys would be wonderful for kids of all ages - and I can honestly say that as an adult I got a kick out of them too!

So how many of you are Harry Potter fans? I am an avid reader and have been through the series of books at least twice now - some of them even more times! I have to admit, I jumped on the HP bandwagon a little late in the game. Somewhere between book 4 and book 5 I think. Once I did, though, I was totally hooked! I remember zipping off to Target on the new book's release date, to pick up my copy first thing in the morning; Bumping into kids and adults alike who were walking and reading at the same time. Halloween is tomorrow and I'm sorta excited! D will be dressing up in the pink butterfly costume from Old Navy. (I love their toddler costumes because they're so warm and fall in the 'Peg can get incredibly chilly - most years we already have snow on the ground!) And she is JACKED about trick-or-treating. She's also pretty excited about all the candy we'll be collecting. What kid isn't?

Up until now, trick-or-treating has been more for myself and my husband than for D... She had only just turned 2 last year, so it was more about the photo op than the actual treats. And of course, most of said treats went straight to my hips! Haha! This year, however, I think we're going to have to put some rules in place. D has a thing for chocolate, and she would sit there all day long chowing down on bars if I let her. Our saving grace here is that she doesn't like most traditional "candy" - things like lollipops, rockets, gummi bears, etc. she won't touch. And that's completely fine by me. I'm in no hurry to introduce another source of sugary junk into her diet.

So my question to you is: How do you manage your Halloween candy? Do you share it amongst the family? Toss it out after a week or two? Donate it? I'm looking for ideas here, because no one - I mean NO ONE - needs the amount of junk food that usually enters a home with kids at this time of year. (Even though it's super fun to collect it!)

Life With Baby

Adjusting to life with a newborn has been interesting. For the most part, I already knew what we would be in for - sleepless nights, a TON of breastfeeding and diapers - but having a 3 year old at home adds a new challenge! D has been doing really well with her baby brother. She loves him to pieces and tries to get her cuddles in with L as much as the rest of us. She gives him his pacifier when he's crying, and tells him it will be OK (totally adorable :) She asks for me to "bring him back" when I take him from their bedroom for a feed at night.

Having said that... We've had a few less than stellar moments with D as well. She gets up a lot at night lately, and I think it's because she knows that L gets so much attention when she's asleep in bed. She certainly misses the one-on-one time she used to get with us, so we've been trying to do as much with her as possible when there is a spare hour or two. One thing I've started doing is including D while I'm making lunch and dinner. She LOVES to help in the kitchen, and since this is time I have sans baby anyway, it's a good way to get a little alone time with her.

For those of you with 2+ kids... How did you go about making sure your older child wasn't feeling left out?

What To Expect: Review

As mentioned in my previous post, pregnancy can be pretty darned complicated. And you know what? Once your little precious bundle is born, things don't always get a whole lot easier! There's establishing breastfeeding and sleep routines, all kinds of newborn "conditions" to worry about and more. I've learned that just because it's your second baby, that doesn't mean that these things become old hat! You still worry. Just. As. Much.

One of the first items I purchased when I found out I was pregnant with D was what so many women (and even my own doctor!) refer to as the "Pregnancy Bible" ... And I can see why they'd call it that. What to Expect When You're Expecting is a comprehensive book about pregnancy, and includes everything from Baby's development week by week, to what symptoms and feelings Mom might be having at the time. I loved being able to refer to it every time I had a concern about a symptom or about the birth itself, and reading up each week about where my little one was at developmentally.

What To Expect has just released an all new version of their popular book What To Expect When You're Expecting, and I was fortunate enough to receive 2 copies of this as well as their two newest books What To Expect The First Year and What To Expect The Second Year. I found the new book to be extremely useful during my pregnancy. I even took it to the hospital with me when I was on bedrest! I looked up symptoms and conditions to learn more about them after speaking with my doctor, and read the entire chapter on breastfeeding so I'd feel more prepared before L was born. I gave the second set of books to my Brother and Sister in Law who are expecting their first baby this February.

He's Finally Here!

These last few months have been anything but easy. With a pregnancy complicated beyond complicated, and having spent nearly 5 weeks in the hospital without internet access - then time on complete bed rest at home due to threatened preterm labour - it was difficult for me to get into blogging. But it was all so, SO entirely worth it because HE'S HERE!!!

L was born on September 19th at 10:57am via c-section. Weighing in at a whopping (all things considered!) 8lbs. and 11oz. and 20.5 inches he was not nearly as teeny-tiny as I thought he might be. He was over a pound bigger than D when she was born! Thankfully, he is healthy and lovely and wonderful.... And such a good baby. We are thrilled. D has been an awesome big sister, she loves having the baby at home with us and enjoys giving her new brother hugs and kisses, holding him and even helping to change diapers! Ha!

We're feeling so blessed. And now that we're all settled in at home - my sweet baby will be 1 month old tomorrow! - I have more time to get back to some of the things I enjoy doing... like baking cookies, and reading lots of books, and of course blogging. I just paid for another year of Born2BeMom.com, so now I am committed.

Anyway. Here's a pic of L in his car seat for the first time :)

25 Weeks and Counting

It's been a long time since I've given a pregnancy update! I'm pleased to be able to say that everything is going smoothly - at least now that I've finished work. I had to give up my daycare quite early, because of cramping and contractions, so was not able to do any more heavy lifting (and that includes hauling toddlers around all day long!) I've been taking a lot of time to just rest - which is what I know my body needs right now. What's been great about that is the amount of time I've been able to spend 1 on 1 with D - we've enjoyed all kinds of neat activities already this spring and I hope the summer is just as fun. It's rainy out today so on the agenda is baking brownies and some craft time together. :)

I've had a few days where lack of baby's movement had me concerned. Some of you might remember my review of FetalAssure.ca - thank goodness for this amazing Canadian business - having a doppler came in incredibly handy at these times. I've been in the habit of checking on the little one every couple of days just to be sure. His last heart rate, on Monday, was 142 bpm - just chillin' out in there I guess! ; ) That's my boy!

Mini Lalaloopsy Doll: Product Review

D is at the age now where her imagination is really growing. I love watching her play pretend, and act out different scenarios with her toys. Some of her favorite items to play with lately have been smaller sized dolls and play sets - toys that fit perfectly in her little hands, that she can take with her everywhere.

I knew when I was given the opportunity to review a Mini Lalaloopsy Doll that it would be an immediate hit. It's small (just 4" tall) and wobbly with brightly colored, fabric inspired clothes, and cute little button eyes. When the doll arrived in the mail, I immediately stashed it away in my purse knowing we'd be taking D out to a restaurant later that evening. It worked out wonderfully because after supper when she started to get a little antsy, I gave her the new doll and it kept her busy until we were ready to go. Each play set comes with small accessories and a pet, and the packaging converts into the doll's own house. My Growing Baby: Week 15

Dear Little One,

This week you are 15 weeks old in Mommy's tummy. You're about 4 inches long, and weigh about 2 and a half ounces. So tiny! You're growing little by little every day, and are able to wiggle around with your arms and legs. Your tiny lungs are beginning to develop, and you are already sensitive to light - though your eyes are still closed.

I've been feeling pretty great, and have you to thank for that! Aside from some sleepless nights (thanks to lots of bathroom trips, and a touch of insomnia) I am starting to get some energy back during the day. I can tell that you're growing, because I have been getting a lot of round ligament pain - which means I can't carry your big sister around as much, and Daddy has to push the shopping cart when we get groceries! Aside from that, everything is going very well. I haven't been sick at all, which is a wonderful thing. I've also been eating a lot - I think you already must love macaroni and cheese, and especially tomatoes!

I have been checking up on you regularly, listening to your heartbeat. It's my favorite thing to do, and your big sister thinks it's pretty cool too. Yesterday, your heart rate was about 138 bpm, and I found it instantly! You like to move around and kick when I'm listening for you, which sometimes makes it tricky!

Can't wait to meet you - just 25 weeks to go!

Pocket Dots: Product Review

You know that awkward stage in pregnancy where your regular pants don't fit, but maternity pants are still a little too big? That's sort of where I'm at. Admittedly, I got big pretty fast. I guess considering it hasn't yet been a year since I last was pregnant, it's not all that surprising. Anyway, I outgrew my "non-mom-jeans" almost immediately, and my "mom-jeans" shortly thereafter. Ack! It's a good thing I work from home, because for a good while that left mostly yoga pants and sweats that actually fit. That is until I was introduced to Pocket Dots ;) See, I already know about belly bands - stretchy bands of fabric that sit around your waist, tuck in the belly and allow you to walk around in public with your pants undone and no one the wiser. (Genius, right?!) The problem is that if you're bending down to pick up your 2 year old a lot like I am, or going from standing to sitting a lot like when you're running errands and getting in and out of your car, the belly band tends to slip out of place exposing...Well, more than necessary.

Pocket Dots are these clever little clips that hold your belly band in place! They clip to your belly band in the back, and then to the back pockets of your pants - they do not budge. I was sent a pair of Nude Pocket Dots to review a few weeks ago. I first tried them with a pair of my regular pants, and wore them out shopping. It felt great not to have to tug at my pants all day! No re-adjustments needed! I think if the pocket dots are exposed, ie. if you have a shorter top on, they do look a little silly. However, since I have such a long torso and I outgrow even maternity tops pretty quick (they just get too darned short!) I always wear longer tops which cover the back of my pants anyway. Now that I'm primarily wearing maternity pants, I use pocket dots with a belly band just to hold up any of the 3-way maternity pants I have which have lost some of their stretch. It's nice not to have to yank up my pants every 5 minutes - which, let's be honest - is really not a good look, pregnant or not!

Danielle has been wonderful to work with! She's been very understanding and compassionate, and knew that I would be anxious to hear my little one's heartbeat. This made things much easier for me when, at 10.5 weeks, the doppler came and I was not yet able to get a heartbeat. I was patient and I kept trying every couple of days. The doppler is very simple to use, and Danielle sent enough gel to last for as long as I'll be needing it, along with an instructional CD that explains how to use the doppler safely and effectively. Eventually, at nearly 12 weeks, and after a few minutes of looking I was able to hear my little bean's heartbeat faintly on the monitor. (I hadn't even heard it at the doctor's office yet!) It was such a special experience, and I loved the fact that my family was able to be there to hear it with me! I am now 13 weeks along as of yesterday, and have been enjoying the early bonding experience and the extra reassurance so early in my pregnancy, knowing that my baby is doing just fine. What's more? I can sometimes hear when the little guy (still think I'm having a boy!) kicks and shuffles around in there, I can hear the placenta sounds, and I can listen whenever I feel the need to just.... Spillin' The Beans

Wow. It's been a long time since I've had the opportunity to blog. The break was unintentional, we've had a lot of things happen within the family over the last 2 weeks that have kept me away from home and away from my computer. But anyway... I am back! AND I have good news!

Along with the difficult stuff comes the amazing news that I'm expecting...Again. Finally. :) I'm about 12 and a half weeks along, meaning the baby will be born via scheduled c-section this September. And yes, I really hope this time I make it to my scheduled date! What I wouldn't give to just walk into the hospital calmly, knowing that my baby is healthy and on his or her way shortly. Of course what happened with my twins is weighing heavily on my mind right now - and will throughout this pregnancy. My last experience with giving birth was very, very traumatic. I would never wish what happened to me upon anybody - ever. Having said that, D was no piece of cake either - I was sitting at home one morning when my water broke, unexpectedly @ 37 weeks. I felt no contractions or anything else, and the next thing you know I was being rushed into surgery! Craziness!

So we'll see how things turn out. I'm cautiously optimistic and ready to be a Mommy again to my new little boy - no, that's not confirmed, I'm just convinced. ;) And hey, pregnancy is kind of a good time! So I think we need to celebrate, don't you? Keep an eye out for some fantastic pregnancy and baby themed reviews & giveaways coming soon. I am planning an event for June which I think you will LOVE! Working with kids means a lot of hand washing in a day. When I'm not washing my own hands (which I've never counted, but I am certain amounts to more than the average person) I'm helping the kids wash theirs! This winter, I've found my skin to be even more dry than usual and my hands in particular have been very, very dry. I have tried all kinds of gentle hand lotions and butters after each hand wash, always with the same result: Greasy, itchy, splotchy burning red hands. Not exactly the result I'm looking to achieve with a moisturizer!

I was excited to try it, because as well as my skin concerns, D has terribly dry skin on her arms and legs and suffers from exzema. My Review
I found Skin MD Natural to be completely true to its claims. I had expected it to be a bit greasy, but it actually felt excellent going on and absorbed very quickly. The dry, usually extremely irritated skin on the tops of my hands felt cool and soothed immediately. It also surprised me how long the lotion seemed to "stay put" for - my skin felt unusually smooth for several hours afterward, through hand washing and everything else. Having seen what a difference the lotion made on my own dry hands, I decided to try some on D's arms and legs and was pleased to find the same result. Her skin feels much less rough already, after only 2 applications. I like that there's an option to get the lotion with SPF 15. I am pretty loyal to my current facial moisturizer (also an all natural product) but it doesn't have sun protection which is an important factor, especially with the weather warming up and my spending more time outdoors! I am certainly tempted to give the Skin MD with SPF a try, as it does seem light enough to keep my skin hydrated without causing me to break out (which is still a concern of mine.)

Overall, I think this is a great product for anyone with problem skin - adults and children alike. Moms can feel good about using a skincare product without harsh ingredients for their entire family, and feel confident that it will keep skin healthy and hydrated.

Remembering My Yesteryear

So, I guess it's that time of year again. Come this Saturday, I'll be another year older only this time it's not "just another year" - I'll be reaching a milestone birthday. One that, in my books, means leaving behind my youth for good. I knew I'd have to write about turning 30 in my blog, because I'd be lying if I said I haven't been thinking about it. A LOT. I just wasn't sure where I wanted to take this post yet. I could go on and on about how difficult my 20s actually were (and in no way - I mean NO way - would I have been exaggerating) but instead I think I'll keep things light, and positive.

Why not celebrate everything fabulous about being a kid and a young adult?! I have tons of great memories, things I loved, loved to do, and things that made my life what it is today. So with that in mind, here's a list of things which made my life just a little bit (or totally) awesome while growing up! Let's go by decade:

1980's

1. Saturday morning cartoons. You know they were better in the 80's! Shows like My Pet Monster, Rainbow Brite, The Gummi Bears, Jem, and although it's not a cartoon this list wouldn't be complete without Saved By The Bell! My brother and I would get up early, make ourselves a bowl full of sugary cereal (Froot Loops or Cocoa Pebbles) and chill out in front of the TV all morning long!

2. Jelly Bracelets and Jelly Shoes. LOVED them.

3. Waking up on Summer Holidays, grabbing some breakfast and getting dressed, then running outside to find ALL the neighborhood kids ready to play - from water fights and tag, to hide & seek in the dark. Also, might I add riding bikes everywhere, even if we were going to a friend's house just 4 doors down.

1990's
1. Brereton Lake and spending summers at the cottage with my Mom, Dad and Brother (and all of my "lake siblings"!) It's still one of the most special places in the world to me, and I love that my daughter will grow up there too.

2. I'll admit it: Boy Bands. Everyone from New Kids on the Block, to N'sync and the Backstreet Boys. I got caught up in the boy band craze like a little school girl. Oh, wait, I was a little school girl!

3. Highschool: I have a little bit of love and a little bit of hate for these years. I would never want to go back and do it all again, but they played a big role in who I turned out to be. Art class, sporting events, crappy school dances... *sigh* Yeah, no, I don't miss it. lol.

4. Finding my core group of friends. I didn't go to school with them, some of them I grew up with and some I met along the way, but one thing is certain - we eventually became more like family, and that holds true to this day.

2000's
1. The partying. Did I do things I would later regret? Pffffft, of course I did! Would I change it? Nah, I don't think so. My friends and I had our regular place, with a regular table and our regular group of people and we'd go out several nights a week. I guess when you're young and have no real responsibilities besides some low paying job to go to in the morning, you can get away with these things. ; )

2. Ahhh, alright... 3 years in Australia was pretty great, all things considered. I won't go into detail, but the experience made me one hell of a lot stronger. Among my favorite things in Sydney: Attending university, shopping in the city, hanging out on the harbor, the beach, and my wonderfully supportive friends.

3. My grown-up life today, here in Winnipeg where I belong with my family. My husband and my daughter, and our everyday life together.

Of course there are many, many more events and things I could write about. I could go into so much detail, things that would make you laugh and a lot that would make you cry. The point is, these past 30 years have been, for the most part, pretty rad... Here's hoping the next 30 (*gag* they'd better not fly by as quickly as these ones did!) are just as great.

Tasty Toddler Snacks

Over the last few weeks, I've watched D become a little less picky and a little more adventurous when it comes to food. It's like something clicked and she realized "Hey! Trying new stuff makes meal time less boring!" She's finally enjoying things like perogies, french toast, cut up strawberries, pizza, and mashed potatoes. D even willingly tried peas - but decided she wasn't interested. Coming from the kid who's diet consisted of cheese sandwiches, bananas, apples or anything apple related, yogurt and cereal (along with the odd additional thing tossed in the mix)...This, rather pathetically enough, is kind of a big deal! So what's my secret?

...Pfffft, I have no idea. Is it just an age thing? They say kids sometimes behave this way because what they put into their mouths is one of the ONLY things they can control about their lives. Yeah, I get that, but it sure drives Moms like me crazy! I guess all you can do is keep offering up a variety of healthy items, and hoping for the best. Now that D is finally willing to at least TRY some things, I've been looking at some of the great recipes at Canadian Parents.

Like, for example, this Rainy Day Spinach Dip. What a perfect way to incorporate vegetables, without even having to serve chunks of straight up "vegetables"! I can see D dipping some crackers or maybe some wholegrain tortilla chips in this and really enjoying it.

Either way, I do feel it's important to encourage D's interest in music, dance and self expression. Our Review

I was sent a World of Rhythm Discovery Kit to review with D. The first thing we did when we opened the package, was put the DVD in and watch. I wasn't sure how D would feel about the Baby Einstein style of movie these days, since she's recently developed a love for all things Disney Princess! However, I was pleasantly surprised. D watched the entire 30 minute feature presentation without budging - she was very, very interested and focused. Later, she asked to watch again, but this time I sat with her and throughout the movie we also flipped through the corresponding board book. I showed D how to act out the different rhythms in the story, and she really enjoyed tapping along to the beat! It was nice to see her learn things like "fast versus slow" and just about rhythm in general. We also took the opportunity to talk about the different characters and visuals in the movie - "what kind of animal is that?" "what shape is that?" and so on. In my opinion, Baby Einstein have got the formula down exactly right for this age group! Nothing is overly obnoxious, it's easy to follow along with and very engaging. We haven't yet tried the CD, but I have no doubt it will get D up and moving!

I made a smoothie for D and I with a handful of raspberries, some fresh mango, skim milk and frozen low fat vanilla yogurt. It was a breeze to blend up, and of course tasted delicious. ;) I used the blade tool which I found was perfect for cutting through the frozen berries, and no strain on the machine at all.

Happy Valentines Day! I don't know about you, but something about February always makes me smile. Part of it has to do with Valentines Day and celebrating those I love most. As a new Mom, it's not always easy to navigate your way through the mountains of "baby stuff" you may or may not need for your little one. Playful Planet: Storyland Yoga DVD Review

Over here in 'Peg city it can get pretty chilly come winter time. (And by "pretty chilly" I mean -40 with the windchill... Ack!!) So making sure your munchkins are getting enough time outdoors, or enough physical activity, especially before they are school-aged can be tough. I often find D has energy to burn, and no where to go.... She's a big fan of running around our Daycare area downstairs, which is fine, but I'll be darned if the Mommy guilt doesn't kick in now and then! The poor kid gets bored!

When I heard about Playful Planet and their Storyland Yoga DVD for young children, I was pretty stoked to check it out. I watched a short video on their website, and I knew immediately that D would absolutely fall in love with it. This kid is far more limber and coordinated than I ever was! D and I tried out the DVD one evening when my husband ran out to get a pizza for dinner. We cleared a space in our living room and I let D pick which story she wanted first. She decided upon Condor Trek (thanks to Diego she has a thing for condors, lol!) I did each yoga move along with her, showed her how to hold her legs and arms and she picked up on it beautifully... She loved it! When the first story was done, D wanted to do the second one. I loved that she was getting so into it, and to be honest, I was enjoying myself as well! Doing yoga with D at the end of the day was a nice way to spend time together, get a little bit of physical activity in while indoors, and just to relax. Now, I plan to make this a part of our routine together, and maybe incorporate it in during daycare hours too. The Storyland Yoga DVD is geared towards children aged 3+, but D is 29 months and I found that with some encouragement she picked up on everything pretty quickly! She did everything she could to the best of her ability.

I'd 100% recommend this DVD to anyone with young children. The stories are imaginative and believable, it's not too "quick" to follow along with, and the kids love it. :) Oh, and hey, I kinda loved it too! As someone with minimal experience doing yoga of any kind, I can tell you that I certainly felt great after doing the stretches along with D.

As a first time Mom when I had D, I was completely new to breastfeeding. Although D took to it well, and to me it seemed to come naturally, I was still a little on edge when having to feed D in public. Oliver's Labels Review

I Guess This Is Growing Up

D has always been a fairly good sleeper. From the time she was about 6 weeks old, she was sleeping through the night in her own room and only waking for a feed after about 6 solid hours of sleep. With the exception of teething and growth spurts, we've rarely had any trouble with D at bedtime. I guess we were just lucky!

The other night, DH and I put our little girl to bed in her crib as usual, without a hitch. Later, we went to bed ourselves and it was not until we were both sleeping that D, I suppose, decided she'd get up to no-good. I woke up to the sound of her knocking.......

On her own door! Ack!

"Mommy, awake now!" "Mommy, get up!"

It was maybe 10:30 at night. This was the second time D has jumped out of her crib. The first time was during a tantrum, and we were giving her a couple of minutes to chill out before going to get her. She bumped her head the first time, and had not really attempted it since. This all just seemed so random! (And funny, to hear her knocking, but of course we could not let her see us laughing.)

Last night, we made the switch. D slept in her big girl bed for the very first time... And you know what? It went great. She didn't get up, she didn't cry, she didn't wake up confused. I'm hoping she'll continue to be a good sleeper. I told D this morning that we would get her a special little present, for sleeping so nice in her big girl bed. She deserves it! My baby is growing up. First it's the crib, next will be her suckie and daipers (can't say I'm not looking forward to the latter!) Yes, it's just a piece of furniture... But she loved it, and we loved it, and she was always so safe sleeping there. It's bittersweet to watch D breeze through this milestone. I'm proud of her that she was so easily able to move on!

And now, for old time's sake.... Here's a pic of my little babe at just a couple of weeks old, in her beautiful white crib. Until next time, crib. ;)

I can't believe how incredibly warm it's been here the last couple of days! This "almost spring time" weather sort of makes me want to do a bit of spring cleaning. I've got lots to do around the house, starting with getting rid of a couple of old, space taking appliances in my basement. If anyone has an idea about a charity or place that might like to remove them from the basement, and then take them away - I'd be interested to know about it!

Speaking of spring cleaning... This is the lovely mess that the snow plow left in my front yard yesterday.

Yup. Seriously. You can't really tell from the picture, put the hill is actually much taller than I am. I don't even want to know what it will look like come March!

The Chicken Soup for the Soul series is one I was introduced to quite young, when their first few books were published. I remember reading the "Teen" book and loving it in junior high, and to this day I still find these books a joy to read! It's Friday, I'm In Love

The kids are sleeping - well, two of "my" three kids are asleep. One is my biological spawn, the other is a daycare child. It's a very, very cold day outside and the weather in my designated daycare area (ie. the basement) is not much better! I've got the baseboard heater on, and the laundry room door open because for some reason that helps. I think, however, that we'll be spending a lot of time upstairs today. I may even let the kids watch some Dora and Diego, so that I can get some work done and maybe bake some muffins. Yum.

Now, the love part... I've recently discovered Quaker Reduced Sugar Instant Oatmeal, in the brown sugar and cinnamon flavor. Oh, dear God, where have you BEEN all my life?! I guess the term "reduced sugar" is relative, but whatever...This stuff is AWESOME on a cold day like today. I always add a little extra water, because I like my oatmeal a bit on the runnier side, with a small handful of raisins. This isn't a product review - I'm just really happy to be chillin' out with my oatmeal, and a quiet house with three kids in it, and my cup of decaf coffee. And it's Friday. Ohhhh, I LOVE Fridays!

Tagalong Review

As D grows, she's becoming more and more independent - and less timid when we're out in public. She's no longer a big fan of sitting in the shopping cart when we get our groceries. While I appreciate that she wants to feel like a "big girl" it can occasionally drive me a little nuts, because the store we often shop at is very busy! I'd hate to lose track of her, or for her to get trampled over by some shopper on a mission.

I was given the opportunity to do a review for Tag*a*long. What a cool product! The best way to describe the Tag*a*long is to call it a portable handle. It simply attaches to your stroller, purse, shopping bag, or anywhere you see fit and then your child can hold on while walking with you - keeping your hands free and the little one close by. No tools required. Brilliant, right? The Tag*a*long is lead and BPA Free, and complies with the new CPSC’s CPSIA standards.

My Review
We were sent the Tag*a*long in Blueberry - a fun, fresh shade of blue. For some reason or another, D was ecstatic about this thing from the minute we took it out of its package. OK! Works for me! I took that as a good sign that she would enjoy using it, and not just let go and motor off somewhere. The Tag*a*long is recommended for children aged 3+ but I feel that D is ready to walk with DH and I sometimes rather than being carried by us. Use your judgement on this one, as you know your child best. Since it's brutally cold outside right now, we were not able to use the Tag*a*long with our stroller as intended, so we tried it out while shopping. I attached it to my purse (of all places) and let D hang on while I had my hands free to grab items from the shelves and push the shopping cart. She knew to stay close, and hold her special handle... And she loved not having to sit the entire time! It did make the whole shopping process a little bit slower, but I wasn't in any hurry so was certainly not a problem. I love that the Tag*a*long reinforces D's sense of independence and I can see how extremely useful it will be when we're out for walks with Daycare in the spring. In fact, that is the PERFECT use for it, and I may be purchasing another one so that each older child can have a place to hang on!

Applied Labels: Review

Kids stuff goes missing a lot. That's all there is to it. Having an item labeled means there's more likelihood of getting it back. I was given the opportunity to do a review for Applied Labels LLC. I was able to choose the style of my labels, and of course have them personalized with D's name. We received our package yesterday, and I was pleased. I was given:

I immediately applied one of the labels to D's milk cup, as we have another child in daycare with a cup that's very similar. She liked easily spotting which cup was hers from across the room - and I liked knowing that the munchkins would no longer get confused. D knows her cup has the "special sticker" on it, so even though she's too young to read, she understands that particular label is hers. Later on in the evening, I ran the cup through the dishwasher and the label remained without any air bubbles, peeling, curling, etc. We also used a label on D's new fleece hoodie, and though I have yet to run it through the wash it does feel secure with the backer in place. The shoe shields are a great idea to keep labels from slipping, and I look forward to trying those too. Each label has a bold font which is easily visibile, and a fun way to "personalize" with a number of icons to choose from - appealing to both boys and girls!

Why Markers and 2 Year Olds Don't Mix

Yesterday was a pretty average Monday over here the daycare. I have a new little guy who is starting full time, and the other 3 kids all seem to enjoy having another friend around. If not to play with, at the very least to use as a "toy" of sorts. Or more specifically, as a coloring book.

Ufff.

This child has beautiful, almost white blond hair. And very little of it, at that. (Can you see where this is going yet?)

D came up to me asking to color with her pen - I gave her one of her notebooks, and a purple Crayola marker. She trotted off, and I went about my business cleaning up after the kid's lunch. The next thing I know, both 2 year old girls are absolutely LOSING IT giggling, completely uncontrollably in the reading corner. Was this really a cause for concern? You bet. I KNOW this laugh, and it ALWAYS means they're up to no good. Especially in the reading corner.

I looked over. The new kid had a purple head.

There really was that much of it. He sat there contently being coloured on by his new, older and rather mischievous "friends." (I use that term loosely!)

Thank GOD for washable markers, and baby wipes.

OK. Lesson learned. This sweet little boy was all cleaned up by home time and I did tell his parents. They laughed. I was relieved.

I'll be taking away all markers until AFTER daycare hours from now on, so my dear instigator of a daughter can't cause any more trouble!

For some reason, D and her little 2 year old friends have decided that it's "birthday week" around here. Huh?! None of them are turning 3 until late next year - but I guess you can't argue with a toddler's logic! At daycare, we sang Happy Birthday and did a "birthday dance" - I don't know what that is exactly, but we did one. After the kids had all gone home and it was supper time, I made the mistake of asking D what she'd like for supper.

Clearly, not thinking.

D looked at me like it was the most ridiculous question she'd ever heard. What's a birthday without cake, right? ...Ugh. So, I told D that we didn't have any birthday cake right now, but if she'd like I could give her some "birthday buns" instead. I fully expected a complete meltdown, but was pleasantly surprised when she enthusiastically agreed that birthday buns would be the perfect supper.

Cool.

Now I just had to figure out what, exactly, a birthday bun consists of. It had to be sweet, and decorated. I toasted a sliced English muffin, topped it with butter and honey, and then put a heart shaped slice of cheese on each half. I gave it to D on her Barbie Princess plate and served her some apple juice in a big-girl-cup.

Worked like a charm! D ate ALL of it, and I patted myself on the back for a job well done and a temper tantrum avoided. I think even DH was impressed, lol. So the next time your kid asks for something from the no-no list for dinner, just serve up a little (and I mean really, very little) creativity instead. ;)

This Holiday Season

With just a few days to go until Christmas, there are a million things going through my mind:

1. I've been trying to relax about the daycare as I do have a space I need to fill - not a big deal, there is a lot of interest. It's just the interviews I find exhausting, as it's not easy having tons of people I don't know coming through my home every day or two. It's not like going to a job interview, or showing people around a full sized center - this is where my family lives, so to carry on this way and constantly be breaking the daycare kids (and D's) routine is not a good time for any of us.

2. I miss my twins. When we went for Santa pictures with D, there was a couple in front of us with newborn twins, and their older sister about the same age as Danica. It really took all the strength I could possibly muster not to just cry, right there, in the mall in front of everyone. I wanted to do those pictures this year. Most of the time, these days, I can handle seeing little ones, and seeing twins will even make me smile. Rather than feeling sad, most of the time, I am happy for the parents that their children are healthy, that they made it. This time it was just different. I'm still thinking about it - because of how I pictured the holidays would be this year. Because of how they're not.

3. 2010 was a brutal kind of year, and I am welcoming 2011 with open arms. In light of that, I feel like my blog needs a makeover. It has become something that I am not - a little too cheesy, a little less interesting, and a little more "sold out" than I'd ever intended. I love doing reviews and giveaways, but I feel like I'm losing interest in writing personal entries in the blog. The blog itself seems to have taken on a life of its own. This begs the question, do I create another blog altogether for personal stuff, or do I keep them together and just give this blog a look I'm more comfortable with? I'll be thinking about it over the coming holidays and in the New Year will be doing things differently, no matter what I decide.

4. Things are not all bad. :) Now that D is 2, she is so jacked about the holidays I am having to remind her each day that Christmas is not for another x-number of sleeps. It's great! She's talking about Santa and presents, and since I've introduced her to the true story of Christmas she's been talking about the baby Jesus and his Mommy a lot too. I've explained that Christmas is a birthday party for the baby Jesus. Now, of course, she's convinced there will be a birthday cake. Not sure how to skirt around this problem, as I don't have a cake mix in the house and I really, really don't have time to bake a cake from scratch. I'd love to just avoid the issue, but D is not that kind of kid... She remembers stuff and will bring it up at the most random time. Humm. Birthday cookies, anyone? (Filing this one away for next year, to be better prepared!)

So I'll leave it at that. I've got to get on a whole bunch of Christmasy stuff now, like baking a dulce de leche chocolate almond skor crunch cheesecake for Saturday night, and wrapping presents for my daycare kids and for D. Then Sings My Soul - Book Review

With Christmas just around the corner, I often get to thinking about our family traditions while I was growing up. Each Christmas Eve we would go to church for the candle light service, and listen to the choir sing the same hymns as the year before. It was comforting to know that no matter what had happened over the course of the year - Christmas Eve would always remain the same. I imagine that many people in history, and today, can relate to this on all of the Christian holidays. Then Sings My Soul is a collection of 150 hymns, stories about them, where they originated and what they're really all about.

My Review
I've always had an interest in music of all varieties - from punk to rap to country and everything in between - I'll listen to it and find something to love about it. What makes a song excellent, for me at least, is the lyrics. If the melody is there but the lyrics are uninteresting, I usually can not be sold on it. What this book does, is give the story behind the lyrics of many beautiful, well known hymns. I was not sure what to expect, but when I cracked the book open I found myself turning the pages wanting to find out more. It's lovely to have the ability to look up your favorite Christmas carols, or hymns from your childhood and find out more about the song, about the person who wrote the song, or just a story that will really make you reflect upon your own faith or life itself. This book would make a wonderful gift for anyone who treasures Christian music, faithful church goers who love the power of prayer and song.

'Scuse Me, Can't You See Santa And I Are TALKING?!

I'm a little embarrassed to say this, but this year will mark D's third Christmas and up until just recently she had never been to see Santa! We didn't do the newborn picture thing - D was 3 months old on her first Christmas, but that year was unbelievably hectic. My Dad was very sick, so he was constantly back and forth between home and the hospital. Whatever free time I had, when my husband was at work, I would spend with my Dad (especially when he was home) so that he could get to know D. I remember doing ALL of my Christmas shopping in one evening, with D in her carseat/stroller and literally more shopping bags than I could handle. The thought had crossed my mind to take her that day for the picture, but I just wasn't up for standing and waiting in line, or making D stay out longer than she should have to at just 3 months old.

On D's second Christmas, I found out I was pregnant so we were a little caught up in sharing the news with everyone! In addition to that, D was going through some major separation anxiety/making strange and I knew that if we were to sit her on Santa's lap she would have an absolute meltdown. Not the "cute" kind of meltdown, either. There were times when she wouldn't even go to her Daddy!! So, last year was a write off.

This year, however, I was DETERMINED to make the Santa pic happen! D has been talking about Santa for months already - from the time the first Christmas ads came on TV and the first flyers started arriving in our mailbox. At some point before Halloween, she even decided that she'd like to pay Santa's house a visit! (This resulted in a temper tantrum to end all tantrums when I told her that we were not able to go.) So far, she has told me she'd like Santa to bring her crayons, and a dragon. Why a dragon, you ask? Well, I have yet to figure that one out.... But my kid is a character, so nothing really surprises me!

This past weekend seemed like the perfect opportunity to hit the mall and visit the Big Guy in Red. My husband had a day off on Sunday - so we got D all dolled up on Sunday afternoon and off we went. I knew the line up would be insane - and it really was - but I didn't care! Thankfully, it was moving quickly enough that (with a couple of cookie bribes) D was happy to wait. She made friends with the little girl in line ahead of us, and all was well. I was really expecting the worst - I kept coaching D on what was going to happen "Santa will say hi, and he'll ask if you want to sit on his lap! And if you DO sit on his lap, he'll give you a treat!!" ........ DH went out of his way at this point to ask me to LISTEN to what I was actually telling her, and was that something I really wanted her to learn? Well, no... maybe not, but in the interest of not waiting in line for nothing, I didn't care, LOL. D is not the kind of kid who would just sit and cry in a picture - no - if she did not want to be there, with Santa, at that exact moment then she would NOT be there at all. She'd literally fight to the death. So, I figured a little coaching was fair game!!!

It turned out the little chat that D and I had was completely worth it. She marched right on up to Santa, and in her best big girl voice said "HI!!!!" When he asked if she wanted to sit with him, she said "Uhh...Yeah! I DO!!!" .... Sweet! At this point I bolted out of the way, so the photogs could snap a pic before she changed her mind. However, they let D take her time with the big guy, so the two of them had quite the talk! I can only guess what she might have been saying to him. "A dragon... a crayons....a baby...!"

The picture turned out AWESOME - D didn't really smile, but that's because she was confused as to what the heck the photographer wanted - after all, she was in the middle of what must have been a very important conversation with Santa Clause! lol. Blooming Buddies In The Garden: Book Review

D is one of those very girlie little girls who loves all things pretty - faeries, flowers, princesses and pink. When given the opportunity to review Blooming Buddies In The Garden, A Book of Blooming Verse; I knew immediately that D would fall in love with the brightly colored pages, the beautiful flowers and the pretty poetry. My 2 year old, apparently, has a thing for poetry. (She really is a lot like her Mommy in some ways!)

Written by Wendy Peterson and Illustrated by Deborah Donner, this book appeals to the imagination of children and grownups alike. Each page is illustrated with beautiful watercolor paintings of flowers in bloom, and alongside each painting is a verse that will spark conversation, encourage positivity, love and respect for others. Blooming Buddies has been given the Parent Tested Parent Approved Award for 2011, as well as the National Parenting Center: Seal of Approval for 2011!

When I read the book to D, she was quick to point out all of the pretty flowers and the bright colors. She loved the verses, and she asked me to read the book to her again once I was finished. I particularly enjoyed the positive messages in each poem and the way the flowers in each illustration really seemed to take on their own personalities. Between the covers of this book are pages and pages of virtual Spring time, which is so lovely at this time of year! Blooming Buddies In the Garden would make a wonderful gift for any little girl on your Christmas list.

TerraCycle Canada: Review & Craft Project

Waste is created at an exponential rate in this country, and a lot of it has to do with the packaging our products are sold in. Not all of these packages are recyclable, meaning more often than not, they wind up in the landfill and sit there for years and years. This does not bode well for our children's future, and if we don't soon start finding more eco-friendly solutions to this problem, they will be in trouble. While not all companies are moving towards earth friendly packaging - there is one company who's been picking up the slack. TerraCycle takes non-recyclable waste and turns it into affordable, eco-friendly products such as tote bags, pencil cases and backpacks! What's more, when trash is donated to TerraCycle through their Brigades program, the collector will gain cash in return, for a charity of their choice (all money is paid to schools and non-profits).

Sounds like a good plan, if you ask me. For review purposes, I was sent a lunch bag like this one:

These items have total kid-appeal! They're unique, and since up-cycling is such an "in" thing to do these days (and hopefully that's a trend that just won't quit) they're trendy, too. My daughter had a peek at the pencil case when my shipment arrive, and she immediately wanted it. I'm not surprised really! Who doesn't love the Kool Aid guy? These products are not yet sold in Canada, but according to the website they'll be coming soon. While buying the products is not yet an option, you CAN help by joining a Brigade and sending in your trash!! This would be a great idea for anyone with kids who take lunches to school or daycare - you're teaching your kids how to be responsible for the environment, and giving them some incentive to do it right.

MAKE A DRINK POUCH WALLET

Materials:
2 drink pouches
clear tape
scissors
ruler
Velcro® fastener
stickers
permanent markers

Instructions:
1. Cut off the top of each drink pouch and clean the inside with soap and water.

2. Cut two slits down the seams on both sides of the front of both pouches. Be
careful to cut through only one layer of the pouch. The slits should come 2½
inches from the bottom. Then cut straight across to remove the portion that you
just cut.

3. Cut off the top of one pouch so that it is 3½ inches long. Cut the top off the
other pouch so that it is 4½ inches tall. Round the top corners with your scissors.

4. Lay the pouches sealed end to sealed end on a flat surface. The side that you
cut into should be face-up. Leave a space between the two ends that is about 1/8
inch and tape the two pouches together in this position. Make sure you tape both
the front and back of the pouches. This will create a hinge so you can fold your
wallet.

5. Fold your wallet at the hinge and fold the longer flap over the top and make a
crease. Then unfold this flap. Attach the self-adhesive Velcro® fastener to the top
of the inside flap of your wallet. Fold the flap down so the other side of the self-
adhesive Velcro® fastener attaches to the front of the wallet.

6. Use stickers and permanent markers to decorate your wallet. This simple drink
pouch wallet will leave you thirsty for more upcycling projects!

Friday Hops

It's Friday, and I am chillin' out here this morning with a couple of sleeping babies. I guess that means I have time to do a blog hop or two. :)

Five Question Friday

1. What is your favorite part of a Thanksgiving meal? The roasted garlic mashed potatoes, and the pumpkin pie!

2. Are you a host or a guest for Thanksgiving this year? Well, since I'm in Canada we had Thanksgiving a while ago already - nope, I wasn't a host. We celebrated later in the month, when family from the US was visiting, and my Mom hosted.

3. When you think of one Thanksgiving tradition, what comes to mind? We usually go to the lake for Thanksgiving! Since having D, it's been more difficult to do that and we often miss out. : (

4. You have two pieces of pie in front of you and you HAVE to eat one...do you choose pumpkin or pecan? Pumpkin! We never have Pecan though, it's always Pumpkin or Chocolate Cream - in which case, I eat both! No shame on Thanksgiving, my friends.

5. Are you a Black Friday Shopper? Nah. The good deals here are primarily online. DH and I will often do small gifts for Christmas, and then have what we call "Christmas on Boxing Day" so we can buy more stuff! That's when we hit all the sales.

Bzz Agent: Scrubbing Bubbles Extend-A-Clean

As a BzzAgent I have the opportunity to try all kinds of new products, and spread the word - which works for me, because you all know I sorta like to talk! Recently, I was given a full sized bottle of the new Scrubbing Bubbles Extend-A-Clean for bathroom surfaces. It came just in time, because I had a few guests coming over that week and needed my house to look its best.

The bottle itself has a battery operated continuous spray nozzle. You unlock it, and then hold the button for a continuous spray - using it on your bathtub, sink, tiles, etc. The cleaner itself is said to continue working FOR YOU for the next 4 days - keeping your bathroom cleaner, longer. I like the sounds of that! Well, I tried it out and let me tell you, it works beautifully! My shower is a little on the older side, so can get quite mildew-y and it's always a super difficult task to clean. It involves a LOT of scrubbing and reaching and scraping - which, in my opinion is both totally gross and rather unpleasant. The Scrubbing Bubbles made my job so much easier! I left the product on for a good 20 minutes. Longer than I intended, because I actually walked away and forgot about it for a little bit, lol. But when I came back, all I had to do was swipe around with a damp cloth and then rinse. Everything was sparkling clean AND I noticed that the shower and sink truly did not build up as much grime in the few days post-clean. Hmm! I sorta like this stuff! If I am being totally honest though, I have to admit that I do worry a little about the chemicals in the cleaner - especially for use in the tub itself where I bathe my daughter almost every day. I don't like the idea of exposing her to the leftover chemicals that did not get washed away. I did rinse it very well, but in future I think I may use it on shower tiles only and perhaps on the sink.

Walt Disney Pictures - Tangled (Review)

Growing up, I was always a huge fan of Disney movies. What kid isn't?! I remember waiting in anticipation for the next animated movie to come out - hoping that my brother and I would get to watch it on the big screen. Some of my very favorites (to this day) are Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast. I guess the whole fairy tale thing never grows old, because when I was offered the chance to take D to an advanced screening of Tangled - I couldn't wait!

Tangled Synopsis
Walt Disney Pictures presents “Tangled,” one of the most hilarious, hair-raising tales ever told. When the kingdom’s most wanted—and most charming—bandit Flynn Rider (voice of Zachary Levi) hides out in a mysterious tower, he’s taken hostage by Rapunzel (voice of Mandy Moore), a beautiful and feisty tower-bound teen with 70 feet of magical, golden hair. My Review
Since D is only 2, I wasn't sure how well she'd sit through the movie so I invited my 2 young cousins along with us, hoping they'd set an example for D. When we got to the theatre, we were promptly given our tickets, our cool 3D glasses (the kids got a kick out of those!) and we found our seats. Everyone settled in, including my 2 year old, to watch the show.

IT WAS AMAZING!

Over the last few years, I don't know how to say this, but I'd been less than impressed by some of the Disney movies. They just seemed to have lost their "magic," which has always made me a little bit sad coming from Disney. Somewhere along the line, I would say after Aladdin, nothing really measured up! Tangled measured up, and then some. The characters were a delight to get to know - a little bit feisty, a little bit whimsical and very funny. The story is a classic, and they didn't mess with it so much that it was a turn off, in proper Disney fashion, they kept fairly true to the classic tale of Rapunzel but modernized the characters enough to hold the attention of the audience. There was enough romance to appeal to the girls, and enough rough housing and humor to appeal to the boys. The music in the movie was beautiful, too - there's nothing like a good Disney song to kickstart your emotions!

As a parent, it was a new experience taking my child to a Disney movie (or any movie, for that matter - since this was D's first!) I was not sure how she, or my youngest cousin, would handle the noise, the action, or the sad parts. It wasn't them I had to worry about though, because when I watched the King and Queen light up thousands of lanterns and watch them float away into the sky on Rapunzel's birthday, (hoping to guide her home) I was a complete wreck! I loved that a Disney movie could still move me in such a way that it would literally bring tears to my eyes, even as an adult.

My cousins both told me they thought the movie was "the best ever!" And that even though it was a little sad, it was not scary and it was super funny. They're pretty sensitive kids, so coming from them you know the movie is "safe" for your sensitive children to see as well. Heck even my 2 year old loved it! She walked out of the movie theatre telling me all about the "princess" and the "castle" and, of course, the "hair"!!! Tangled is a great flick - I'd give it five stars, and recommend it to families of all ages.

The 2 Year Old Personality: WOW Blanket Tour

I don't know where she gets it, but my daughter has one heck of a personality for being only 2 years of age. Coming from a Mother who was painfully shy as a kid and a Father who tends to keep to himself, she's ridiculously funny and charismatic! I noticed this when she was still quite small, but as she grows and especially now that she is talking so much, it has become something I particularly love about her.

D's vocabulary is expanding by the day, and I never know what she might surprise me with next. Something as simple as asking for a snack, to her, is an opportunity to make everyone laugh - and most of the time, she succeeds! D has also started, in her own toddler sort of way, to tell "jokes" - she's particularly fond of telling me which grown-up has poo-poo in their diaper, and then laughing hysterically! She loves to dance, and will always make sure that somebody is watching when she does her larger-than-life, epically dramatic "fall to the floor" move. When you ask D a question, you'll never get a simple, short response. Usually, she'll indulge you with something along the lines of, "Oh, no, no, nooOOoo way" or "Ahhh, YES, pleeEEeease." There have been times when I am not paying attention, and she'll take my chin in her chubby little hand, and gently turn my face towards her to let me know that I should be listening to her now.

For all of the times D drives me a little bit nuts, there are an equal number of times she completely cracks me up, or has me beaming with pride at what a polite and sweet little girl she really is. :) She loves her daycare friends and showers them with hugs, and (probably too many) kisses throughout the day. She shares her toys, and her lunch. If she finds something on the floor that belongs to someone else, she'll make sure and give it back to them. Parenting can be such a challenge. It just feels great to know that while I don't always feel I'm doing the best job - she IS learning some of what I've been trying to teach her! I just can't help but love my kid! Disorder by Chynna Laird. The book is a memoir of a mother fighting for a diagnosis
when countless doctor's told her that her daughter was just "spirited". Chynna
shares the heartbreaking reality of mothering a child with a severe "No touch" rule.
She calls it "Mothering without touch." Although Not Just Spirited is the perfect match
for parents of children with SPD, the determination and victories shown in the book will
encourage anyone parenting a child with special needs or working to overcome

My Thoughts:

Potty training my daughter has been an ongoing process, and it can be difficult to work on training her while still going about our regular daily lives. While I love the benefits of using cloth training pants; helping kids to "feel" wet, avoiding the ridiculous cost of disposables, and added comfort for the child, I've often found them to be incredibly messy. Taking D out of the house often meant putting her back in a diaper, which she will almost always fiercely protest! (I take that as a good sign.) These Bambino Mio training pants have a waterproof lining, and I love that even though they are not overly bulky, they're still very absorbent! They have a super soft inner and outer layer, so they feel much better than a paper training pant. They're also very easy to pull on and off, with the elastic waist and a loose enough fit to make them easy for a toddler to manage on their own. These are some of the best training pants we've tried. D can run around comfortably, and I can be relaxed in knowing that if she DOES have an accident, her pants will most likely remain dry and cleaning her up will be a quick and easy process.

While I tend to spend a whole lot of my day in yoga pants and t-shirts, that doesn't mean I've completely forgotten how to look good! I love checking out the latest beauty and fashion mags, finding new trends and (of course) shopping. New make-up looks are a huge part of that, and I love to experiment with color when I have the time.

And later, they had the trendy glittery deep blues and forest greens that were so popular. But, I digress.... I was sent a sample of their Lash Call Lengthening Mascara in Limelight. Woah! Bright shade, right? It is, but you know what? It works! I thought I'd check it out while going out to a movie the other day - I used a coat of black mascara on my upper lashes, and then (not to brag...much...but I have these extremely long lashes which do well with techniques like this ;) I used the green mascara on just the tips. It ended up just right, I had a little pop of color right where I wanted it to brighten up my eyes. The mascara was nice as it didn't flake or smudge - stayed put throughout the movie (and I even cried a little!) and the rest of the day.

Stocking Stuffer: Savvycents Wallet Review

I have a huge problem when it comes to saving money; I'm an impulse buyer, but that's not the worst of it! When it comes to using coupons, I fail miserably. A few years ago, when my husband and I discussed how to manage "life with a baby," he knew I wanted to stay at home with D, rather than go back to the office after my maternity leave was up. In order to make this work, I agreed to do everything it takes to save a few bucks, and to try and bring in at least a little bit of cash to help out. I always have great intentions of going to the grocery store with my hand full of coupons and saving x-amount of dollars. I scour the internet for the freebies, and the big savers and feel like I'm doing my part - that is until I get to the grocery store and realize that, once again, I've forgotten EVERY SINGLE ONE! Argh!

This is where the Savvycents Wallet comes in. Melinda Claudpierre formed Savvy Cents in November of 2009, after being inspired by a book about living debt-free. She knew there must be a better way of maintaining a budget, than carrying around stacks of paper envelopes filled with cash and coupons - That is, a better, and more stylish way! When my wallet arrived, I was super excited to find that I was sent the snazzy new Pink one! I really am such a girlie girl, after all. It's very shiny and bright, and pretty, and so cute! I went straight to work moving all of my bank cards, membership cards, gift cards, cash, license, etc. Over to the new wallet. I should have taken a picture - my old wallet was over stuffed and a complete mess, but in the Savvycents wallet everything has a place. It's so much more organized! Next up, I collected all of the coupons laying around my desk that are still valid, and put them into categories: Grocery, Personal, Baby (I was able to create this category label myself), Restaurants and Miscellaneous. The next day, we went grocery shopping and for once I REMEMBERED my coupons! I ended up saving a bunch of money, and collecting $12 in literally free merchandise. Had it not been for the wallet, I probably would have forgotten all of my coupons AGAIN and not received my freebies at all. Now, whenever I clip a new coupon, it goes straight into the wallet and the first thing I do when I get into the store is check to see which coupons I can use that day. And THAT is how it's done - save money without even really trying.

Just Another Manic Monday

What's better than a lovely weekend spent with family? Not a whole lot! I had a great time on Saturday, previewing Disney's Tangled with my daughter and my two young cousins - watch for that review on the 24th of November! Yesterday, of course, was my anniversary - so my husband and I had a quiet evening at home (with D, as we'll be doing the dinner/movie thing on Tuesday night due to his work schedule.) I did some baking, and made a nice meal. Yes, the weekend seems to have flown by, and it looks like I'm back to the daily grind on this frosty Monday morning. D is still sound asleep, but my daycare children will be here any minute now.

Until they arrive, I think I'll check out Meet Me On Monday. Here are this week's questions:

1. Do you eat Sushi? Yes! Yes, yes... I LOVE sushi. I love to eat it, and I love to make it. I'm a big fan of the slightly less traditional Philadelphia Roll.

2. What kind of bath soap do you use? Softsoap Milk & Honey shower cream. It smells like summer. :)

3. How often do you talk to your Mom? Every day! Some times a few times a day, and often she'll just pop in to see D.

4. What TV shows do you watch on a regular basis? My guilty (and totally lame) pleasure is Degrassi, LOL.

5. Did you start Christmas shopping yet? A little bit! I've got most of the kids (not D, but relatives) stuff done. Still collecting things for D, as well as my immediate family, and will have to put something together for my daycare kids as well. I tend to do a lot of shopping online - it's just easier, and you can get such cool Hand Made items which I think are more meaningful!

Give Me A Break!

This weekend, on November the 14th, my husband and I will celebrate our one year anniversary. It's been an interesting year! We've had many ups and downs together, but have managed to stay strong through all of it, and we are both hoping for our second year to be a little bit easier. Unfortunately, we're not financially able to do anything big to celebrate - that's OK though I guess, since we just came back from vacation in September! DH promised to make it up to me next year, and I will SO hold him to that (I'm thinking somewhere hot, lol). Hopefully, we'll at least manage to get out for a nice dinner and a movie, if somebody is able to watch D. She and I could seriously use a break from each other anyway!

As for D.... Argh! Tantrums, lately! Yesterday, since I had a day off, I did a whole bunch of baking. I made cheese buns from scratch, cinnamon buns, and a chocolate pudding cake. After dinner, I offered D a little bit of cake with whipped cream as a treat - you'd think that would be a good thing, right? She FLIPPED out, screamed "nooooooo!" and (as she never seems to learn) began hitting inanimate objects until she hurt herself. Alright then. No cake for you. This morning, we were doing a craft for my Grandma who's in the hospital; Grandma fell and broke her hip, she had a half hip replacement. :( I offered D some stickers to use on her paper plate, and once again she had a complete meltdown.

Toddlers. The heck?! lol.

When it comes to getting organized, I tend to have serious problems! I've never been a neat freak, and I will admit that household tasks tend to fall lower on my priority list than, say, checking my email or going out shopping. This tends to apply to my household and family management skills as well. While I TRY and keep papers, bills, health records and the like in one tidy spot - they'll often wind up all over the place. Posted on the fridge, stacked on top of the TV unit, laying on the kitchen table... You name it! And of course, when it comes time to FIND these records... It's anyone's guess as to where they might be.

When I heard AboutOne was looking for reviewers - I jumped at the opportunity. AboutOne is an online Family Information Management System. What, exactly, is that you ask? Here's what they have to say about it:

What's my take on AboutOne? While I haven't had an enough time to learn all of its features, I can certainly see where it will come in handy. I can feel safe knowing that my pictures of D will be safe in a digital scrapbook (also an awesome way to keep them organized, and send them to family!) This includes her scanned in artwork, which I think is such a cool feature. It's nice to know that I can easily store family memories and be able to refer to them later, to show D or show family and friends. Also, all of our family finance information and online health records are safe and secure here - and it's so easy to input information for later use! I like that we can be at a meeting with the bank, or at the doctors office, and I can simply use my phone to send information to AboutOne which I can then reference later when I need it. It does seem like you need to be up to date with your technical hardware - ie. have a scanner, Blackberry or iPhone, etc. to take full advantage of the system. Unfortunately, I haven't got these things - so I do feel a little bit limited in what I can do with it. Having said that, AboutOne is a great way to eliminate the need for tons and tons of calendars, papers, notebooks, folders that you might otherwise have laying around your house! I can safely say that AboutOne is helping this Mommy maintain an organized family life. (And a tidier house!) Furthermore, it's allowing me more time for what matters the most - spending time with my family.

A Handmade Christmas: KD's Doll Shop Review

I've decided to make a few changes this Christmas. On top of sticking to my budget (for real, this time!) I've decided that I'm going to make some changes in the kinds of gifts I give to my family and friends. I want to be green, and I want to give items that are handmade. Some gifts I will make myself, but there are some amazing items which I'd much rather leave to the professionals! (While I am extremely creative, I lack the patience to be extremely crafty ;)

That's why, when I was given the opportunity to do a review for KD's Doll Shop - I was honestly so thankful! I've been wanting to give D a doll that is truly special, one that doesn't look or feel like all the other toy store varieties she already has. When I saw the kind of work that Kristi over at KD's Doll Shop does, I knew I had to contact her. Kristi is this amazingly talented person who makes each individual doll with much attention to detail, and thought, and I believe with love too - you can just tell when someone truly cares about their creations. She uses bold, all natural fabrics and textures, giving each doll a unique look and seemingly its own personality. They are whimsical, and sweet - and I believe they appeal to all ages!

When I contacted Kristi, I let her know that I'd love to review a doll for my 2 year old daughter. After speaking to her, she didn't feel that she had anything in her inventory that would be appropriate for a 2 year old - so, she very generously decided to make D a doll of her very own! She designed a doll perfect for the younger age group, which will hold up to little hands playing and and dragging it around for hopefully years to come! Here is a picture of the doll that Kristi designed for D:

It is so perfect for her! The colors are bright, and fun - certainly appealing to a toddler. The dress comes on and off easily with a velcro closure at the back, which of course is always important. (D is at that stage where dressing and undressing her "babies" is a huge part of play!) And Kristi even made a cute little mushroom, and a baby to go with the doll itself, adding to the imaginative play possibilities this cute doll already has. The dolls hair is stitched on securely, too, so D won't be tempted to try and pull at it. (Although, she's pretty careful with her dolls and tends to treat them with respect!) What I love most about the doll is that it's unique. There's not another one like it out there, at least - not exactly like it! So giving a gift like this to a child in your life means you're giving them something no one else can, or will. It's also safe - no plastic, lead or any dangerous materials like you might find in other childrens toys. I love the idea of having a toy that doesn't already "do everything for you." I know for a fact that around the holidays, D will be given all kinds of battery operated items, noise machines that don't always encourage the imagination. I feel great about knowing that a doll like this one will last for years to come, essentially growing with her as she makes up new scenarios to play out and takes the doll with her wherever she goes.

As for this little doll in particular - although I generally don't do my reviews this way - it seemed a shame to give her to D now, when Christmas is so close. I hope Kristi doesn't mind, but I honestly just felt the doll was so special - I really wanted to present her in a special way! Traditionally, in our family, we open one carefully chosen gift on Christmas Eve and save the rest for the morning. So, she'll be wrapped and adorned with ribbon, and tucked under the tree, waiting for her new best friend to find her on Christmas Eve. I'm looking forward to seeing D's smiling face as she opens this very special gift.

B30DC - Day 2

The meaning behind my blog name -

I am one of those (admittedly annoying) women who will come right out and say "I'd rather be pregnant" and really mean it! I don't glow - although I feel all glowy inside - and even my first pregnancy wasn't without complications. That didn't matter, I just loved it! I embrace every day of morning sickness - and trust me, it is NOT easy when brushing your teeth and then promptly throwing up becomes a daily ritual - I can live through the aches and pains and sleepless nights. I guess I complain a little. My husband might argue that, and say that I complain a lot, but I really remain positive the whole way through. I actually FEEL better when I'm expecting.

After my first daughter was born, I was over the moon! Like so many Moms, I didn't mind getting up with her at all hours, or holding her when she cried or changing the messiest, grossest diapers I'd ever seen. I would do anything for her. Then when the time came for me to go back to work - I just.... couldn't do it. The thought of leaving her was tearing me apart, even Monday to Friday, 9 - 5. I was calling around to different daycares, literally tearing up while on the phone with them.

One day, I was at a friend's wedding and got to talking to another friend of mine. I told him how difficult leaving D was going to be for me, and he said "Kristin, you were like born to be a Mom." He proceeded to tell me how great I am with kids, and when I mentioned wanting to open a home daycare, he spent a good 20 minutes convincing me to do it. He was a little tipsy at the time (and having said that, so was I, lol) but I knew he was genuine. And I took it seriously. I went home and created a business plan the next day, crunching numbers and doing all of my research. Later that fall, I opened my doors to 3 adorable kids who D grew to love! Since then, I've been able to stay home with my daughter - which is a dream - and watch her learn and grow with her friends every day.

Being a parent is the most challenging and rewarding, but most importantly the most fulfilling thing I've ever done. I would love nothing more than to have another child or two, to give D some siblings and be here for them they way I've tried to be here for her. I really do feel like I was born to do this. :)

Bringin' It Back

It's November the 3rd, ladies. Do you know what that means? No, I'm certain that you probably don't. To most of you, it's probably just another average Wednesday in November. (A boring month by my standards.) It was to me too, until I opened up my email this morning to find it's actually..........wait for it............ Housewife Appreciation Day???? You mean, that exists?!

OK, so the term is a little archaic, but the concept sounds rather appealing. There's a day to "appreciate" women who stay home and look after the kids (or the pets), and do the daily chores, and cook and organize the goings on of the family. In other words, Stay At Home Moms - this day is for YOU! And if you don't believe me, just Google it. After you do, make sure you tell your husbands that you deserve some "me time" today, and not to forget to mark it in the calender for next year!

30 Days of Bloggin' - Day 1

Why not? ... That's what I thought when I noticed that Megan, over at One Day I Will... posted a linky to join her in the 30 Day Blog Challenge. It's the beginning of a new month, there's not much happening between now and Christmas - AND it's a great way to prompt some awesome blog entries! If you feel like joining in, I've posted the list of topics and the linky on a new page: 30 Days of Blogging.

An Introduction -
What don't my readers know about me already? I suspect some know more than others. I grew up in Winnipeg, in a quiet suburb with my parents and my younger brother. We spent our summers out at our cabin in the Whiteshell Provincial Park, and the rest of the year we'd go out on weekends as much as possible. Growing up, I was always interested in a few things in particular - art, writing, and children. Over the years, this lead me to various jobs working in Childcare, some courses dealing with Education, and ultimately a degree in Communications. I lived in Australia for 3 years, while going to school. After arriving home, I met my husband and we started dating, then moved in together after having been friends for quite some time. Not long after, we had our gorgeous daughter, D! She's the light of our lives. We've been trying to give her a sibling, and at one point we were certain we'd succeeded. I was pregnant with twin girls, but at 30 weeks our daughters Kira and Lydia were stillborn and we had to say goodbye. It's been a very difficult road, but we're continuing on this journey and still hoping to expand our family. Born 2 Be Mom is my documentation of life as I know it now, and a way to express my dreams of what's to come.

1. I totally dig Macaroni and Cheese. The cheesier the better.
2. My socks never match.
3. I have more pairs of black heels than I know what to do with, and almost no opportunities to wear them.
4. If I don't read before I go to sleep, I can't sleep because I can't stop thinking. About anything and everything.
5. Despite being "anti-pink" for a number of years, I've gone back to my girlish childhood ways and embraced the color as my favourite.
6. My favorite pizza toppings are geeen peppers & black olives with extra sauce.
7. Venti low fat caramel macchiato extra hot with no whip. :)
8. Or a simple dark roast, black coffee will do.
9. I'm inherently messy.
10. I'm totally not a dog person. Unless they are small and fluffy, then I'm sold!
11. Long island iced teas, dirty martinis and Crown & Coke.
12. Please excuse me while I make a fool of myself on the dance floor. And no, I'm not embarrassed!
13. I was a 9 year old die hard NKOTB fan, and will admit to the fact that I think they've grown hotter over the years.
14. Secretly addicted to Degrassi: The Next Generation. I'm not sure what this says about me as a 29 year old woman.
15. Some of my favorite things: Rain storms, sitting around the fire with friends, hot sunny days, good books, making my daughter laugh.

Toddler's Rules

Toddlers... I literally spend 24/7 with them., and a good portion of that time is spent with a total of 4 of them, 2 years and under! Along the way, I've come to learn a few things about toddler's logic. Primarily, that it's not logical at all. For example, yesterday, I gave D a cheese slice after she had asked for one. I didn't fold it in half the way I usually do. ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE! God forbid that her cheese slice is the wrong shape! Another time, it was meltdown central because D's Elmo ice pack, for her lunch, would not "open" ... Sorry, kid. They're just not meant to do that! It's extremely difficult not to laugh during these little episodes - I can't tell you how much entertainment value there is in watching four kids of this age interact. They're hilarious! They're also terrible at sharing. It's one of those lessons we go over several times.. an hour. I received this in an email, and I'm sure many of you can confirm its accuracy. I sure can.

Not Always Easy

It wasn't long after we lost our girls that it was plastered all over the news about Celine Dion being pregnant with twins. I'd like to say it didn't bother me, because she's a celebrity and blah, blah, blah.... but the fact of the matter is; I was annoyed about it. I didn't much feel like hearing that someone else was overjoyed and all the rest of it, while I was grieving the loss of my twin baby girls. As a matter of fact, I actually remember laying in the hospital when an Entertainment Tonight story about Celine came on the television - I shut it off immediately and cried myself to sleep.

I guess she gave birth a few days ago. That's cool, I mean I would always want the best for other people and their children - I would never, EVER wish what happened to me upon anyone. I'm not resentful. It just feels like I'm re-visiting the sadness all over again. My husband and I have been designing a grave marker for the girls over the last few days, emailing back and forth with the Memorial company to make sure it's just right. I guess that's a huge part of why I've been feeling so down. I'm relieved at the fact that Kira and Lydia will finally have the recognition that they deserve, but going through this process is a constant reminder of the fact that they are not here with us instead.

I didn't actually log in this morning intending to write such a sad post... That being said, I'm not really one to sugar coat my feelings, and when it comes right down to it - this is what's been on my mind quite a lot.

It's Friday. I now have the opportunity to chill out with my family for a couple of days. With Halloween upon us, I am totally looking forward to dressing D up and taking her out trick-or-treating! She's old enough this year to understand what "treats" are, so to see the look on her face as her little bag fills up with goodies will be priceless, I am sure. Thank God for my munchkin, I don't know what I would do without her to cheer me up when things get difficult.

Morning Brew

So I decided to give up caffeine yesterday. If you'll remember, I've been working on my Fall to-do list and at the moment am particularly focused on #10. So in the hopes of increasing my chances, I've decided to ditch the enormous cup of morning coffee in favor of either a decaf version or some herbal tea. Herbal tea.... Pffft! I run a home daycare. Yesterday. Did. Not. Go. Well.

I woke up feeling pretty groggy, and stumbled from the bedroom straight to the ol' coffee machine. I had to FORCE myself to get the decaf out, and the only thing working to convince me at that particular moment was the fact that it was a brand new tin of Nabob, and I loooooooove the smell of a freshly opened tin of Nabob.

*sigh*

By 10am my head was pounding. Seriously. I felt like someone was hangin' out inside my brain with a sledge hammer just going to town. This continued all day long, through the evening and as I went to bed. This morning, I woke up and my head STILL hurt.

And at that exact moment, my will-power ALMOST completely disappeared. I say "almost" because this morning I made myself "half-caf." I couldn't stop myself. And guess what?

The headache is gone. Go figure.

myTunes Monday - Paper Wings

Where do I start with this one? Of course my life has changed drastically in the last 10 years. Of course, I wouldn't change any of it for the world and I believe that I'm meant to be here, where I am with my husband and my daughter and the rest of my family. That, however, was not always the case.

I got married to my first husband very young, I was 21 and he was from overseas... I left Canada and moved to Australia for 3 years. Everything seemed "just right" in my 21 year old mind. Then, I woke up one morning and realized that the person I was married to, was heading in a direction I wanted nothing to do with. He was always, ALWAYS away from home due to his career, and I was forging my way through a new life in a new city, with new friends and new surroundings. He hated my friends and my need to NOT be alone, and I hated the way he was choosing his career over everything (and everyone) else.

Promises were made, and then broken. In his mind, there was no such thing as "home" and family were just those people you hang out with on Christmas, and talk to on the phone once every few weeks. He thought he had it all figured out. I was trying to figure it all out. Then, one day, before I realized that it wasn't worth trying to change his mind - it was all over.

5 Question Friday & Following

It's Friday! We've had a great week here at the B2Be house, with family visiting from out of province and lots of fun activities. This weekend we're planning to hang out with the relatives a little more before they head home, and then next week we've got MORE relatives coming from my side of the family! It's going to be faboosh. D has been having a blast getting to know everyone again - she loves to visit and chat with the grown ups. She's not such a big fan of the pets over at her Grampy's place, but to be fair I wasn't a big fan of dogs either at her age! To each their own, right? Can't blame the kid. :)

On to the important topics for this morning... Five Question Friday:

1. Who is the better cook, you or your spouse?

Ahahahahaha... I WISH that my husband would use the stove once in a while. Sadly, I do all of the cooking for our family. So I guess I'm the best by default! Even if he DID cook, though, I'd still be the best. Because I'm awesome like that.

2. How often do you talk to your mom?

Every day. I love my Mom!

3. Are you adventurous in the kitchen or stick to the recipe?

Totally adventurous, I almost never USE recipes let alone "stick" to one. Occasionally they are my inspiration to try something new. Unless, of course, I am baking. Baking is more of a science than an art.

4. Is your second toe longer than your big toe?

Uhhh... Not sure, but I think so. Am I supposed to know this? I mean, is it weird that I don't?

5. Do you dress up for Halloween? (Bonus question: What will you be this year?)

I like to throw on a Tiara and a set of fairie wings, and call it a costume.

A Slice of Interweb Pie

As of yesterday, Born 2 Be Mom can be found at www.born2bemom.com !!! It feels kinda good to own my own itty bitty, very little piece of the internet.

I was in junior high when we first got "connected" at home. My parents bought our first family computer when I was 13. It was a Christmas gift to us all. Later that year, Dad signed up with Compuserve Online and I remember being absolutely fascinated. He showed me how to do a search - using Spontaneous Human Combustion as an example, of all random and slightly grotesque things. (One of those Awesome Dad memories I'll never forget! lol) And from then on, I was hooked. I started chatting, emailing, reading, researching, browsing.... And one day, I really hoped to have my own website.

I took a few cracks at it as a teenager, but nothing ever caught on or really kept my attention for much longer than a month or two...That is, until I started blogging. I had an Open Diary for the longest time, even meeting friends there I still keep in touch with to this day. Nearly twelve years later, I think the journal still exists, but I haven't logged in or used it. I would hate to go back now and read the entries from some of those early years.... Yikes. We certainly change in our late teens and 20's. Anyway, here I am, inching closer to 30 every day and I've got this blog which I am super proud of! Best of all, though, I've got my own family whom I am super proud of and they GIVE me the reason to write and to keep this blog going. *sniff*

This morning, I woke up in a crummy mood.... but I'm feeling pretty great right now! What can you tell me about your first "experiences" with the internet???

As mentioned earlier, we've started potty training D in an effort to be rid of disposables and fight back against diaper rash which she seems particularly prone to! Not counting a few minor setbacks (family outings and the fact that she was feeling pretty sick this weekend) we're doing very well! Rather than going the pull-ups route, we've been putting D in these uber-cute Potty Patty cloth trainers from CSN Stores.

I was given the opportunity to do a review on $40 worth of product of my choice from CSN Stores. It took me quite a while to decide what I wanted! With over 200+ stores to choose from, it seems there are an endless number of products to look at. I certainly had options - anything from the latest kitchen gadgets to the coolest educational toys for kids.

Potty Patty Training Pants:
We have specially designed these padded potty training pants to fit loosely so that they can be pulled on and off by the toddler, without adult help. Not only does this increase the chance of getting to the potty on time, but it also makes whole process much more independent, which is the goal of this potty training system. They have an absorbent center panel that contains the accidents, but will make your toddler uncomfortable and thisefore increase her awareness of her excretory function, especially when compared to diapers and pull-ups. The potty pants feature breathable side panels, wide rib leg bands for a comfortable fit and a center panel with fiber sponge for super absorbency.

Machine wash in warm water with like colors
Washing these once before using them increases the absorbency of the padding

In the end, I was glad I went with the training pants. I chipped in a little bit extra and purchased 8 pairs, knowing we'd definitely be needing them! D is still in the beginning stages of training, which means a lot of accidents and the need to change her often. These are super absorbent and I found that if I managed to get to the mess quickly enough, I didn't always need to change her pants (just the underwear) - which was great, because it saves on laundry! They're snug enough to prevent messy leaks, but have a loose enough fit that they are easy for D to pull on and off. I find some training pants have a too tight waistband, making it difficult for toddlers to work with. These were much easier. The only thing I'd still like to do is to get a waterproof cover for the pants, for trips out of the house and times when we might not be so near to a bathroom.

I was also very pleased with CSN Stores customer service. I did not have any issues with my order, and found the shipping to be fast and reliable. They sent a couple of email notices to let me know my order was on its way, so there was no doubt in my mind that everything had been processed and I'd receive my package shortly.

myTunes Monday

Everybody has a song that reminds them of a time in life or a moment, or an occasion or sometimes just a feeling. These songs can be of any genre, and sometimes they don't even really "fit" with the moment itself. Sometimes they just happen to be playing in the background or they're already stuck in your head.

I was laying in bed the other night and I realized just how many of these songs I actually have - there are tons! So I thought I would start to share them with you, on myTunes Mondays. I'll start this Monday off by telling you about my old Monday morning "anthem." I listen to ALL kinds of music, which you'll soon find out... But this song happens to be country. I loved to crank it up on my iPod while making my way to the office downtown on the bus, or sometimes in my old apartment when I was getting ready in the mornings. It will forever remind me of what I used to do for a living, and how much I love what I do now instead. :)

Potty Training 101

We recently received 8 pairs of cloth training pants from CSN Stores to review (coming soon!) As D recently turned 2, we've decided it's as good a time as any to give potty training a real shot. She has been showing signs of being ready such as telling me immediately after she's soiled her diaper, asking to sit on the potty and waking up dry after long naps.

We've done a lot of potty trials in the past, but have not really pushed the issue as D did not seem to fully understand it yet. This weekend, we've been trying to properly train for the first time - and so far it's going pretty well! She's wet her pants only once, and gone on the potty 3 times. She'll often come and tell me her pants are dry, which is great! A few times I did have to put a diaper on her, because we've been out shopping and visiting relatives. It's a work in progress - I can see it's going to be a longer process than expected, but D has been handling the change with enthusiasm which tells me that we're on the right path.

I've been giving rewards - new story books, stickers, etc. when D makes some good progress and pees on the potty. We're trying to make it fun, and be encouraging about the whole thing without making it seem like a "chore" or like something she "has" to do. What tips or suggestions have you got for potty training???

The King's Christmas List: Book Review

I was sent a copy of this beautiful children's book, via the Booksneeze blogger's program. In short, it's a story about the spirit of giving:.

Emma and her little dog Shu-Shu were thrilled to be invited to the King's birthday party. But what do you get a King for his birthday? Emma and Shu-Shu have no gift, but they bring the Christmas cake they made with Mom and put on their Sunday best as they dash to the King's carriage. And of course, Emma couldn't go anywhere without her beloved Cherry-Bear. On the way, they have encounters that lead them to bestow their cake, winter-cape, and even Cherry-Bear, on others. Now they're chilly, rumpled, and empty-handed-what will the King think? Emma frets, but when they finally meet the King at his palace, they discover they gave the King exactly what he wanted.

I found it refreshing to read a tale about the true meaning of Christmas, and enjoyed the lovely message this book conveys to young readers. Over and over, readers are reminded of what it means to truly give selflessly - something we all could use reminding of from time to time! The book is beautifully illustrated, and will certainly capture its audience with bright reds and greens and pretty snowy scenes. The characters, Emma and Shu-Shu are sweet, and very believable, making the message simple to understand for young children as they'll so easily relate. At the end of the story, there is a page listing various ways to give your own gift to the king. So not only are children able to learn about giving, they are given a real opportunity to give a gift themselves - a wonderful way to teach your kids about those less fortunate, especially around the holidays.

I will be putting this book away until December, and will be giving it to my daughter as a Christmas gift. She is still a little young to completely understand it, but reading the book to her each Christmas will be a lovely tradition for years to come.

With Thanksgiving nearly here and it being the long weekend (well, almost!) I thought it appropriate to share the things I've been thankful for this past year. As we all know, even when life gets extremely difficult, there are always reasons to be thankful for what you have.

1. I am thankful for my daughter who lights up my life, every single day and unknowingly gives me a reason to stay strong and remain a positive person.
2. I'm thankful to have a husband who supports me in my endeavors, loves unconditionally and works hard to keep our family afloat.
3. I am thankful to have an opportunity to live in the neighborhood where I grew up, close to family and so many wonderful friends.
4. I'm thankful that I've come to understand who my true friends are over the years, and for their ongoing love and kindness and for the joy they bring into my life.
5. I'm thankful for the opportunity to do what I love - to have a job that, a lot of the time, doesn't feel like one.

These vitamins are just what the doctor ordered! D is not a big fan of vegetables or meat, so I'm always worried that she's not getting the nutrients required for optimum health. I know... she's 2, but a Mom never stops worrying, right? At first, when I tried to give her one of these, she backed away. (Always true to her fussy self.) Wow, is it ever dark in the mornings now that I have to get up at 6am. There are people who might complain about this, but I was thinking as I was pulling on my yoga pants to go to the "office" (also known as: my basement) this morning just how lucky I am! I have the opportunity to stay home all day long with my little girl, and watch her play and learn along with her friends. She's starting to miss them all on weekends.

I am looking for some cute "Fall themed" craft activities I can do with the kids. They're all very young - 2 and under. I've thought of the hand print turkeys -

Does anyone have any other ideas? What crafts do you like to do with your toddlers???

1. What is the best dish you can make? I am known for my homemade pizza! I've been told it's "the best ever" by more than a few people. :)
2. How often do you change your sheets? Probably not as often as I should. That's embarrassing.
3. What is the longest car trip you have ever taken? All the way to Victoria BC from Winnipeg and back, just this past August!
4. What is your favorite fruit? Raspberries and Peaches, mmmmm...
5. Would you rather have breakfast for dinner or dinner for breakfast? Breakfast for dinner. I have nothing against dinner for breakfast, it's just that eating anything in the morning really doesn't appeal to me!

Apple Stuffed Acorn Squash

I write all the time about trying to get D to eat her veggies - or, to be honest, to eat anything at all! The other day while grocery shopping, I picked up an Acorn Squash. I had no idea what to do with it. I cook sweet potatoes all the time, and when D was small I used to make pureed pumpkin for her occasionally, but I've never done a squash before! I found a recipe online at AllRecipes.com (an awesome resource if you've never checked it out.) It's pretty basic, but the results were really yummy. I think, had D been brave enough to put even the tiniest morsel of this in her mouth, she really would have liked it! For those of you whose kids are picky, but will at least try things - here's the recipe:

Roasted Apple Stuffed Squash

Ingredients:

1 acorn squash, halved and seeded
1 Large Apple, peeled, cored and chopped
1 Tbsp. extra light olive oil
1 Tbsp. firmly packed brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 Tbsp butter (optional)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
Brush squash with olive oil, then in a shallow baking pan, cut side down.
Bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes, or until tender.
Turn cut side up; stuff the hollows with apple chunks, sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon. (Dot the tops with butter - optional - I didn't bother to do this.)
Bake for 20 minutes more or until apples are tender.

I'll admit, I did a bit of tweaking and combined 2 recipes to make this one - but it turned out great! For faster cooking time, you can microwave the halved squash on high for 5 minutes to get things started.

My Thoughts:
As a home daycare provider, and mother of one toddler I realized as soon as I saw the Little Looster how valuable it would be. I've got it placed in my daycare bathroom, where it has already been put to good use! My daughter is just starting out with the potty training process. Up until now, during daycare hours, I'd just been seating her on the toilet and holding her hands. It always seemed to make her nervous - and I can understand why, because big potty seats were not made for little bums! As soon as I set her feet down on the Little Looster, she immediately seemed more comfortable and secure. She let go of my hands, and sat happily trying to do her thing. That, in itself, is as good a reason as any to recommend this product! I'd like to add that having the ability to avoid the use of a small training potty is a huge bonus. No more unpleasant clean ups, and your child has the benefit of not having to make the transition from the small potty to the grown up version. The Little Looster can also be used as a stool later on, and although it isn't necessarily designed for this, we push it over to the sink to wash hands quite frequently too. The Little Looster is sturdy, with a unique and clever design - it's safe, it stays out of the grown ups way, and it makes potty training a relaxed experience for both toddlers and their parents.
